Ebola has taken over the news cycle and the consciousness of Clevelanders, but there’s a bigger real threat looming: influenza. Cleveland Clinic, The MetroHealth System, Sisters of Charity Health System and University Hospitals are joining together with the City of Cleveland, Mayor Frank Jackson, and Cuyahoga County in a collaborative effort called “Focus On Flu.”
The flu is a very real threat to your health if you are not vaccinated against it, and the best protection against the flu is vaccination. The CDC recommends an annual flu shot for everyone six months of age and older.
In addition to getting vaccinated, preventive actions also can reduce the spread of influenza:
Wash your hands often.
Avoid close contact with sick people.
Stay home from work or school if you are sick with the flu.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
