Shaken Baby Syndrome health education

       Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), a form of child abuse,  is a serious injury that occurs when a frustrated person shakes a baby.  Crying is the number one reason people shake babies.  Shaking back and forth in a whiplash motion causes devastating injury.  

Shaken Baby Syndrome can cause

  • Death in one-third of babies
  • Blindness
  • Deafness
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Seizures
  • Paralyses
  • Lifelong dependence on others
  • Learning and behavior problems.

Services

         The St. Luke's Foundation provided a grant from 2002-2005 that made it possible for Public Health Nurses to provide Shaken Baby Syndrome education to staff on Labor and Delivery units, police, and prosecutors.  Trained  Labor and Delivery nurses presented prevention education to new parents.  The program reached more than 1,700 nurses, providers, police, and prosecutors in Cuyahoga County. 

         The program provides free education to students in the Polaris Career Center, Euclid and East Cleveland Schools. Free education is also available as an in-service for childcare providers.  Click here for more information about free childcare provider training.

The program produced an educational brochure, video, and handouts.
