Semipublic Sewage Systems

SEMIPUBLIC SEWAGE DISPOSAL PROGRAM

The Cuyahoga County Board of Health inspects all semipublic sewage disposal systems treating less than 25,000 gallons of wastewater per day in our jurisdiction for proper operation and maintenance. These systems service small businesses in areas where sanitary sewers are not available. The inspection frequency is determined by the Board of Health's contract with the Ohio EPA and varies according to the size and type of system. We currently permit and inspect nearly 250 semipublic sewage disposal systems operating in our jurisdiction.

Registered Sanitarians conduct routine inspections of these systems to determine if they are operating as designed or if repair of malfunctioning equipment is required.  Effluent samples can also be collected and analyzed to determine if the wastewater is being sufficiently treated prior to being discharged to the environment so that public health nuisance conditions are not created.  The Board of Health also continues to educate individual semipublic system operators on the required maintenance of their system.  Smaller treatment systems of an outdated design may be inadequate to properly treat wastewater.  These systems may ultimately need to be replaced in the future if a sanitary sewer connection is not made available.

Contact Supervisor Rick Novickis (ext. 1208) or Program Manager Marty Baier (ext. 1246) at (216)201-2000 for additional information on the program.  Detailed information on the Semipublic Sewage Program is also available at the link to the Ohio EPA's website provided below.
