School Environments
General Information In accordance with HB 203 (Jarod's Law) the Cuyahoga County Board of Health conducts comprehensive inspections of over 330 schools in the General Health District on an annual basis. During these inspections, Registered Sanitarians identify health and safety conditions and sanitation practices within the school environment that may pose a threat to students and staff. Items which are focal points during a typical inspection of the school environment include indoor air quality, proper storage and handling of hazardous chemicals, pest control and pesticide use, playground safety, communicable disease prevention practices, proper food handling in kitchens and cafeterias, and general fire and electrical safety. Sanitarians also work closely with school administrators and school nurses and make them aware of public health concerns identified in a school building. The Environmental Health Services area works closely with the Board's Nursing Services, Community Health Services, and Epidemiology Services area to promote and provide coordinated school health programs. This office collaborated with other local health departments, the Ohio Environmental Health Association, the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio School Boards Association, the Ohio Department of Education, and the Bureau of Workers Compensation on the development of O.A.C. 3701-54 under HB 203. These minimum standards became effective on September 27, 2007 and will help to provide a benchmark for schools as they strive to create and maintain healthy and safe environments.
