Breast and Cervical Cancer Project

Title: Breast & Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP)

Program Description:
The Breast & Cervical Cancer Project is a screening and early detection program serving women who are asymptomatic as well as symptomatic.  The Cuyahoga County Board of Health has been providing the administration and coordination of the Breast & Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP) for a five county Northeast Ohio Region since the program began in this area in 1994, having served as one of the four pilot projects for the program.  In 2002, two additional counties were added for service.  The Ohio Department of Health, through funding by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, administers the project in Ohio to screen medically underserved women for breast and cervical cancer.

Objective:

The project provides education, screening, re-screening, diagnostics and case management related to breast and cervical cancer.

Services include:

Mammograms, Pap tests, office visits, clinical breast exams, surgical consultations, colposcopies, breast ultrasounds, biopsies and other diagnostic procedures.  The clinical services are provided through a network of more than 100 Ohio primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, gynecologists, surgeons, mammography facilities, radiologist, technologists/technicians and cytologists.

Treatment Services:

On July 1, 2002, Ohio Medicaid expanded eligibility to BCCP clients who require treatment for breast or cervical cancer (or pre-cancerous conditions).  This expansion benefits the following:

  • BCCP clients who were diagnosed with cancer in the past through the program and are still undergoing treatment
  • Existing BCCP clients who may be diagnosed in the future
  • Any new clients that enroll in the project

Eligibility:

Women must meet the following criteria to enroll in the BCCP:

  • Live in households with incomes less than 200% of the poverty level
  • Are uninsured
  • Are 40 years of age and older to receive Pap tests, pelvic exams and clinical breast exams
  • Are 50 years of age or older to receive mammograms

County Service Area:

Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Trumbull

Community Partners:

The Breast & Cervical Cancer Project (BCCP) is also supported by a private grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Northeast Ohio Affiliate. This grant helps to pay for breast related procedures not covered by the Ohio Department of Health grant funding, i.e.  such as mammograms for women between ages of 40 to 49.
