The Cuyahoga County Board of Health received a national award with the City of Cleveland Health Department at the National Immunization Conference held in Atlanta on March 17th, 2008. The CDC award recognized the efforts of Cuyahoga County in raising immunization rates in children under 3 years of age by 11.3%.

This achievement reflects a comprehensive unified approach towards the elimination of low immunization coverage rates in pockets of need throughout Cuyahoga County. The health of communities is directly related to the level of protection against vaccine preventable diseases, with the most vulnerable of  populations being children 35 months of age and younger. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health operates 11 immunization clinics throughout the county, along with clinics in Cleveland covered by Cleveland Health Department, City of Lakewood covered by Lakewood Health Department, and Shaker Hts. covered by the efforts of Shaker Health Department.

Specific programs to keep immunization providers such as Pediatricians and Family Practice physicians up to date on the current immunization schedule and the availability of new combination vaccines are ongoing educational programs offered. The Consortium for Healthy & Immunized Communities, Inc., provides a link for all providers to stay abreast of the ever-changing immunization arena.
