Seasonal Gastrointestinal Illness (Norovirus) or Flu?

December 21, 2007

Target Segment:

During the winter months it is not uncommon for illness to occur in clusters as people gather to celebrate the holidays with co-workers, friends and family.    It is important to distinguish between the flu and gastrointestinal illness because they can be transmitted in different ways.  Flu is an infectious upper respiratory illness that is caused by the influenza virus.   Flu is typically spread from person to person.  Symptoms of flu include fever (usually high), headache, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and runny or stuffy nose. Gastrointestinal Illness can be caused by different bacteria and viruses, including Norovirus.  It can be passed from person to person or infect multiple individuals through food and water, especially if food products are prepared by ill persons.   The symptoms of Norovirus and gastrointestinal illness can be severe and may occur suddenly.  Symptoms include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal Cramps

Norovirus infections tend to occur more frequently during the winter months.  The virus is particularly robust and may survive on inanimate surfaces like table tops and door knobs.  To protect yourself from illness this season and prevent clusters of illness it is important follow these simple guidelines:

• Frequently wash your hands with soap and warm water, for at least 20 seconds, be thorough.  Finish by drying with a single use paper towel and use it to open the door.  Further Handwashing Guidelines
• Disinfect surfaces routinely and especially after witnessing someone become ill. How to Properly Clean and Sanitize after Vomit and Feces
• If you are sick DO NOT report to work, especially if your occupation requires you to prepare food, provide direct patient care, or involves child care.

Some cases of illness may result in dehydration.  If you are immune compromised, seek medical attention.
